Kaposvár

Kaposvár is located on the River Kapos and southwest of Budapest. It is the capital city of Somogy and has a population of about 70,000 people but this varies from source to source. Most of the buildings in the city are of modern design but there some that can be visited like The Dorotty House. This house is built in s Boraque style and the second floor was only added in the 19th century while the ground floor was built in the 18th. It used to be the manor of the Eszterházy family. The city has many parks to see like and was once known as ‘the city of flowers’.

The Museum of the Somogy region is based in Kaposvár and has many valuable piece of art from very well known artist like Jozsef Rippi-Ronai who was actually born in the town itself in 1861. There is plenty of history and folklore about the Somogy shepherds and the fishermen of Drava in the museum. The city itself grew as an industrial influence due to the building of a railway between Budapest and Zagreb in the 1800s. This resulted in the city being very well developed over the following years.

The city has many restaurants that offer traditional food such as the Corso Restaurant, which is known for its goulash.
