Székesfehérvár

This city in Hungary is located southwest of the country’s capital Budapest. One of the city’s claims is that it holds the oldest seat of the Hungarian monarchy and also holds the crown jewels of the monarchy. This town is very Baroque in appearance, nestled between the Velencei Mountains and the Bakony Forest. The inner town is well preserved and has some very old style architecture and really gives the impression of an old European town to the city.

One of the architectural wonders of this city is ST Stephen's cathedral. This was first dedicated to the saints Peter and Paul but was later changed. It was built in 1470 but today looks like an 18th century style boraque church. Johannes Cymbal painted the frescoes on the ceiling in 1768 and there is a wooden crucifix on the northern wall of the cathedral that was built in memory of the people who died in the uprising of 1956.

The Bishop's Palace is a very prominent building in the city and was built by using the rubble from the royal burial chapels and the medieval basilica. A pharmacy that was put in place by the Jesuits in the year 1758 named the Black Eagle has rococo furnishing and can be found north of the town centre.
